Week 6

What did you learn this week? This week in lab I learned more about flower dissection and the parts of a flower. I learned that there are female and male parts of a flower- female parts being pistil, stigma, style, and ovary. The male parts are stamen, anther and filament. We also did an activity that helped us learn more about sea turtles and the dangers that threaten their survival. I learned about certain dangers that sea turtles encounter such as being eaten by sharks or raccoons eating sea turtle eggs, but I also learned how humans are a great threat to sea turtle survival as well. I also learned that sea turtles only have about a .01% chance of survival, which is why female sea turtles lay so many eggs at once. This week in lecture we also started learning about genetics. I learned more about DNA vs RNA, and how to differentiate between the two. I also learned more about the difference between genotypes- the combination of alleles that are possessed for a specific gene, and ...

Week 5

What did you learn this week?  Although this week we did not have an in person lab, I was still able to learn a lot of valuable information. We reviewed the 5E model, and how to utilize this with a lesson that we would make for our future class. We also started learning about food chains vs food webs, different types of biomes, ecosystems, habitats, and the overall study of ecology. I specifically learned more about the main difference between a food web and food chain, and never really thought about the two being majorly different. I also learned more about the 10% rule in the food chain, which is something that I had forgotten about before we discussed it again in class.  What did you find clear and what was confusing?  This week, I found myself feeling really confident after we reviewed the 5E model, and think that I have a very clear understanding of what it is and how to use it in a class. Something that is still tricky for me, though I wouldn't say it is conf...

What did you learn this week?  Although we did not have an in person lab this week, I was still able to learn a lot, specifically I learned more about the 5E's. The 5E's stand for engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate. These 5E's are teaching strategies used to help students better understand new material presented to them. I learned that you can use the 5E's in many different activities, which I like because this can be practiced for many different subject areas in science. I also was able to explore more with NGSS and finding a performance expectation that aligned with the 3rd grade activity given to us in the document. Each step of the 5E's has a function that can be related to the activity students are participating in. For example, a way to have students get engaged in the first part of the activity is by asking them questions, allowing them to share their knowledge on the relevant subject, etc.  Which parts did you find clear and which were confusi...

Week 3

What did you learn this week?      This week, I learned more about how living things are interrelated, as well as reviewed the life cycle of living things. I learned about the characteristics of a life cycle- that the distinct stages and length of stages vary between species. I learned about the key component of many life cycles which is reproduction. I learned that life cycles often involve changes in physical characteristics which we call development. I also learned about adaptation and how life cycles can be influenced by environmental factors, and lastly I learned about how all life cycles follow the basic pattern of birth, reproduction, and death.  Which parts did you find clear and which were confusing?  I thought it was very clear learning about predator prey relationships, because this is something that I remember learning about for years in elementary and middle school. I also found it very clear when we were discussing photosynthesis and it's rol...
