Week 9 Earthquakes and Volcanos

Image
What did you do in lab today?  This week in lab we spent time learning more about earthquakes and volcanos. We spent time at the beginning of class labeling where we thought volcanos and earthquakes frequently occurred, then spent time researching where they actually occurred. We learned that a lot of earthquakes and volcanos occur at the coast and fault lines.   What was the big question?  What are volcanos and earthquakes?   What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion? This week in discussion we spent time working on a pangea puzzle. We spent time working as a group cutting out, labeling and then putting together the continents before they separated.   Read the online textbook chapter:                                                                            ...

Week 8 : Geology that kids see

What did you do in lab today?  This week in lab we did an experiment that required us to observe different types of sand. We spent time observing different characteristics of each type of sand such as it's color and size. After we observed it, we made an educated guess as to where the sand is from (desert, river, beach).   What was the big question?  Where does this sand come from? What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion? In this weeks discussion, I learned more about the rock cycle. I learned that there are 3 kinds of rocks (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic) that may do 3 things. I also learned more about erosion and weathering, and that erosion means the rock has moved, and weathering means that the rock has been broken up.   Read the online textbook chapter:                                                      ...

Week 7: Rocks and the Rock Cycle

What did you do in lab today?  This week in lab we spent the beginning of class discussing our exam, which I found helpful. We also began talking about our new unit of geology and did an investigation with starbursts. I unfortunately had to leave lab before we finished the investigation however.   What was the big question?  The big question we were discussing in lab this week was "Is it a rock?"   What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion?  This week in discussion we talked and learned more about different types of rocks. Ted walked us through an experiment that showed us how buoyancy works by having us guess if a soda can would sink or float. We also had 3 volunteers pick out a geode rock and try to find the most hallow one. We tested which was the most hallow by weighing the rock in water and air and used the Specific Gravity equation to measure. Read the online textbook chapter:                  ...

Week 6: Geologic Time

What did you do in lab today?  This week in lab we spent the beginning of class reviewing for our first exam on Thursday. After that, we started talking about our new unit, geology. We spent time on an online website, looking at different timelines surrounding the earth. I felt this activity was a good introduction to our new unit, and allowed me to understand a little more about major events that have happened on earth.   What was the big question? The big question we were discussing in lab this week was "What are the significant events in the history of Earth?"   What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion?  No discussion this week- exam.   Read the online textbook chapter:                                                                                ...
