Week 15

What did you learn this week?

This week we learned and explored how to create a lesson for 5th graders using phenomenon to learn about the conservation of matter. We used baking soda, vinegar and other tools like a scale, balloon, and funnel to explore this investigation. We had to participate in multiple experiments before we found a structured way we could explain this phenomenon to students. There was a lot of trial and error, for example we realized that using a balloon wasn't the best way to demonstrate the conservation of matter, so we had to adjust our experiment. When we adjusted our experiment, we took away the balloon and added baking soda by using a test tube into the soda bottle. Overall, I learned that there are many ways that teachers can demonstrate the conservation of matter to students, but it is our job to figure out the best way to demonstrate this to students.

How can you apply what you learned to your teaching in the future?

I plan on applying what I learned to my future teaching by utilizing this experiment in my future class. This experiment helps students understand how to collect and observe data, what questions to ask, and how their data and observations can help answer the question they are investigating. It allows students to see a chemical reaction happen, and then ask themselves why they think this is happening. Likewise, I want to have students experiment by themselves and make observations for the first day of this experiment. I think by just allowing them to play and make these observations allows them to think more deeply into the investigation question.

What are your remaining questions?

A remaining question I have after lab today is how should/ can I aid students who are frustrated with not automatically knowing the answers to investigation questions. I know that even with myself, I sometimes get frustrated when I don't immediately understand why a reaction is happening, so I can predict that some students will feel the same way when experimenting. I know that as a teacher, we should not jump right in and give them the answer, so I want to know more about ways to aid to students who may get frustrated and shut down during these investigations.
