Week 5 Galaxies to Black Holes
- What did you do in lab today? This week in lab we presented our projects to our class. My group presented over The Lifecycle of Stars. Other groups presentations consisted of Meteors, Meteorites, Craters, and Comets, Galaxies, and Black Holes.
- What was the big question? The big question for this week revolved around the presentations, as each group came with a set of multiple choice questions that allowed the listeners to think deeply about the content that was discussed.
- What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion? I learned more about galaxies in Thursday's discussion which helped me understand them better. I learned that there are 2 trillion galaxies, that each galaxy has about 200 billion suns, and that a galaxy is just a collection of hundreds of billions of stars. Furthermore, I learned about Katie Bouman and how she is the person who took the only worthy picture of a black hole. Lastly, I learned more about the inner and outer planets, and that the inner planets only have 3 suns- 1 on Earth and 2 in Mars.
- Read the online textbook chapter: What did you learn? I learned that the asteroid belt is located between Mars and Jupiter, and that it contains a vast majority of asteroids known as minor planets. I also learned more about the Milky Way, and that at the center of it is a black hole named Sagittarius A, which has 4 million stars. What was most helpful? The section under Meteors and Meteorites were most helpful to me. This section included definitions and key concepts of meteors, comets, and asteroids. This was helpful to me because I find these terms to be confusing, so having a clear definition on what they are and what they do was very helpful. What do you need more information on? I would like more information on Black holes. Though the textbook did a good job at explaining what they are, it is hard for me to fully comprehend what a black hole really is. I know it is not an actual hole, rather a space, but I don't fully understand them. How would the universe/ galaxy be different without blackholes? Or would it exist at all without black holes?
- What questions, concerns, and/or comments do you have? As I previously mentioned, I am still not too confident about meteors and meteorites, and all that stuff. I would like to spend more time in class covering these concepts to get a fully understanding of what they are, their purpose, etc.
