Week 5
What did you learn this week?
Although this week we did not have an in person lab, I was still able to learn a lot of valuable information. We reviewed the 5E model, and how to utilize this with a lesson that we would make for our future class. We also started learning about food chains vs food webs, different types of biomes, ecosystems, habitats, and the overall study of ecology. I specifically learned more about the main difference between a food web and food chain, and never really thought about the two being majorly different. I also learned more about the 10% rule in the food chain, which is something that I had forgotten about before we discussed it again in class.
What did you find clear and what was confusing?
This week, I found myself feeling really confident after we reviewed the 5E model, and think that I have a very clear understanding of what it is and how to use it in a class. Something that is still tricky for me, though I wouldn't say it is confusing, is pointing out the major difference between habitats and ecosystems. I know that habitats are specific places where particular organisms live, and I know that ecosystems is where a community of living/ non living things interact with each other in an environment, however I sometimes get tripped up on whether an organism would live in a ecosystem vs a habitat. Other than the difficulty with establishing a difference between a habitat and ecosystem, I also found myself having a very clear understanding of what a biome is, as well as what a food chain is and how it shows where energy is flowing to.
How can you apply what you've learned to your future teaching?
I plan on using the 5E model in my future of teaching because I think it is a great teaching strategy to use in order to assure student success. This model allows students to engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and then finally be evaluated. I think this model is key to student success, so I plan on using this in my future elementary science class. On top of that, I obviously also plan on teaching students about ecology, and diving deep into the importance of the food chain because I think it is an important part of ecology for elementary students to learn about.
5E model from my group and I

Hi Morgan, I also think that we learned a lot of great information this week even though class was held on Zoom. I thought learning about ecology was interesting. The 5E model is definitely something that I will be using in my future classroom.
ReplyDeleteHi Morgan, I also think that going back over the 5E in small groups helped me better understand exactly what they mean. The difference between habitats and ecosystems is also still a little tricky for me to see.
