Week 2: Space, The Final Frontier

  1. What did you do in lab today? No lab this week!
  2. What was the big question? How did the space race shape our understanding of space and technology?
  3. What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion? I learned a lot more about the space race during discussion- I was unaware of this before Thursday. I specifically learned about how Russia and the USA were "racing" to send the first people to the moon. I knew that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first men on the moon, but I learned who Alan Shepard was, and that he was the first American to go up to space. Though he did not orbit or land on the moon, being the first American in space was still a great accomplishment. I also learned that Russia nearly beat America to be the first country to have people land on the moon, however Russias space craft failed, and therefore Armstrong and Aldrin were the first men on the moon.
  4. Read the online textbook chapter:                                                                                  What did you learn? After reading the chapter, I learned more about how women were not allowed to go to space- though they had all the right qualifications and advantages to do so. I learned that there were 13 women who were interested in going to space and were tested to do so, yet despite them passing and even out performing some men, they were denied access to do so.                                                                                                           What was most helpful? I think the "Teacher Talk" section of this chapter was the most helpful. It provided me information that I was unaware of before reading, such as how Dr. James Van Allen, who attended the University of Iowa, designed the radiation detector on Explorer 1. I also liked that this section mentioned 3 different women who were mathematicians and engineers at NASA. I have never seen the movie Hidden Figures, and have not heard a lot of information up until now about these women.                                                                                                                                                                                   What do you need more information on? I would like to have more information on the future of America's plans on exploring space- specifically Mars and potentially other planets.
  5. What questions, concerns, and/or comments do you have? One comment I have about lecture and the textbook is I really liked how it was stated that women had every advantage and passed all tests to be able to go to space, yet were still denied access. I think this is important to teach future students because you need to teach about oppression that happened in history to understand 1) how far we've come, and 2) how far we still need to go.
