Week 3: Space- The moon

  1. What did you do in lab today? This week we created our own experiment in lab. Each table was in charge of conducting their own experiment that showed the two phases of the moon.
  2. What was the big question? What are the phases of he Moon and why do they occur?
  3. What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion? I learned more about the moon in this weeks discussion, specifically more about how the moon was created. We discussed different theories of how the moon was created- fission, co formation, colliding planetesimals, etc. We also discussed other facts about the moon, like how often the sun rises on the moon (once every 28 days), how the moon actually does have gravity, just a lot less, and how the moon is in the New Moon phase just before and after a solar eclipse.
  4. Read the online textbook chapter:                                                                                  What did you learn? I learned more about what created the moon and caused the earth to tilt- being hit by a protoplanet named Theia. Though I learned about Theia a little in lecture, the textbook aided my understanding that this impact is what caused earth to tilt, have seasons, and gave us a moon.                                                                                           What was most helpful? I found the additional links and videos in the textbook to be very helpful, which ultimately aided in my understanding of the phases of the moon. Likewise, the chart of Characteristics of the Moon was also very helpful to me. This provided a wide variety of information, some of which was new to me like the information covering the gravity on the moon; and some which was reiterated to me through the chart- like the Moon's surface.                                                                                                                   What do you need more information on? I would still like to have more information on the relationship between the sun and the moon- because I know there is a strong correlation between the two and that they rely on one another. However, I still don't feel very confident about the specifics with their relationship, and I feel that if I knew more about it, I would have a better understanding of the moon and all it's phases.
  5. What questions, concerns, and/or comments do you have? One comment I have about the textbook is I like how straight forward and easy to understand it is. I like how it clearly states vocabulary words that are most likely unfamiliar to a lot of students, and how clearly it describes important facts. The way this textbook is structured would be beneficial in an elementary school classroom, in my opinion, because of the clearly stated facts and vocabulary, as well as the different resources like videos and additional links.
