Week 11: Climate Change

 

  1. What did you do in lab today? This week in lab we learned about the 3 variables that cause weather- heat, water and air. At the end of our discussion we were able to apply our knowledge to our upcoming assignments over different weather apps. We spent time creating our charts that we will utilize for this assignment. ​
  2. What was the big question? The big question we were discussing in lab this week was "What is the water cycle?" and "What is weather?". ​
  3. What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion? Exam during lecture this week. ​
  4. Read the online textbook chapter:                                                                                  What did you learn?​ Something that I learned from this textbook this week was the pressure systems. Specifically, I learned that the air pressure, which change throughout the day, affects the weather of an area. A high or low pressure systems dictates a high or low pressure that what is normal for an area.                                                                           What was most helpful?​ The most helpful part of this section was the "How to read a Weather Map" part. I knew that a red line meant warmer weather, but I learned through this section that a rd line indicates a warm front and a blue line indicates a cold front. Likewise, it was helpful to know that the triangle points in the direction that the front is moving.                                                                                                                                                         What do you need more information on?​ Although I learned more about the air pressure and it's role in weather, I would still like some more information on this because it is a new idea/ concept for me. I know that a high pressure system is associated with good weather, but it's hard for me to understand why. 
  5. What questions, concerns, and/or comments do you have? A comment I have about the textbook this week is I appreciate all the extra resources available. This unit is a little more confusing for me, so being able to watch videos and view graphs/ charts/ resources is very helpful.

  What did you learn this week?  This week we learned and explored how to create a lesson for 5th graders using phenomenon to learn about the conservation of matter. We used baking soda, vinegar and other tools like a scale, balloon, and funnel to explore this investigation. We had to participate in multiple experiments before we found a structured way we could explain this phenomenon to students. There was a lot of trial and error, for example we realized that using a balloon wasn't the best way to demonstrate the conservation of matter, so we had to adjust our experiment. When we adjusted our experiment, we took away the balloon and added baking soda by using a test tube into the soda bottle. Overall, I learned that there are many ways that teachers can demonstrate the conservation of matter to students, but it is our job to figure out the best way to demonstrate this to students.  How can you apply what you learned to your teaching in the future?  I plan on applyi...

Week 5 Galaxies to Black Holes

  What did you do in lab today? This week in lab we presented our projects to our class. My group presented over The Lifecycle of Stars. Other groups presentations consisted of Meteors, Meteorites, Craters, and Comets, Galaxies, and Black Holes. ​ What was the big question?  The big question for this week revolved around the presentations, as each group came with a set of multiple choice questions that allowed the listeners to think deeply about the content that was discussed.  ​ What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion?  I learned more about galaxies in Thursday's discussion which helped me understand them better. I learned that there are 2 trillion galaxies, that each galaxy has about 200 billion suns, and that a galaxy is just a collection of hundreds of billions of stars. Week 1: Earth Moon System

  What did you do in lab today? In lab, we talked about why we have seasons. We specifically talked about how the seasons work based upon direct sunlight and how much sunlight is hitting the surface of the earth at a certain time. We discussed how seasons happen when direct sunlight hits a tropic (northern and southern line).        ​ What was the big question? The big question that we were answering these 2 days was "Why do we have season?"  ​ What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion? In Thursday's discussion, we also discussed why we have seasons, specifically talking about how being closer to the sun does NOT mean it is warmer. We specifically discussed Aphelion, which happens around July 5th, and how the earth is 94,500,000 miles from the sun; and Perihelion, which happens around January 4th, when the earth is 91,400,000 miles from the sun.  ​ Read the online textbook chapter:                    ...
