Week 13- Local Climate Change

  1. What did you do in lab today? This week in lab we spent time working as a group to create a presentation over precipitation and how it is related to climate change. We worked as a group to convey the correlation of precipitation and climate change, and how the rapid increase of precipitation is a sign that climate change is occurring. Once our presentation was complete, we delivered it to the class and asked 3 important multiple choice questions that was correlated with the information presented.
  2. What was the big question? "Why should you care about climate change?"
  3. What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion? In discussion this week we talked about climate change and the evidence that shows climate change is real and needs to be cared about and discussed. A specific piece of evidence we spent time talking about was glacier retreat. This evidence shows that there will be no glaciers left due to them melting as a direct result of climate change. We also saw the drastic change glaciers have had in the past 30- 100 years, and how the change is rapidly increasing.
  4. Read the online textbook chapter:                                                                                  What did you learn? Something that I learned from the textbook was the habitat changes that are occurring in Iowa as a direct result from climate change. I learned that hardiness zones are a way of defining what plants will grow best in an area, and learned that the range of plants in Iowa is shifting north. Iowa used to be evenly split between zones 4 and 5, however Iowa is now entirely in zone 5 with zone 6 starting to appear.                               What was most helpful?  I think the section "What can you do about climate change" was most helpful for this chapter. It can often feel overwhelming, and the truth of the matter is that one person will not make a difference on climate change. However, knowing that there are still things that you can do to make a small difference is helpful information, and I think if everyone, or at least a majority of people took the time to educate themselves on the topic, we could make a positive improvement with climate change.                                                    What do you need more information on? I would like more information on the people who are heavily against climate change/ do not believe in it. I would like to see information regarding their job positions and the research they are doing or have found that convey to them that climate change is not real.
  5. What questions, concerns, and/or comments do you have? A comment I have after the information I have learned this week is I believe everybody should take a climate science class either in high school or college. I know that there are specific units that may cover climate science, however I think it is becoming vital that people take time to understand the true impact climate change is having on our world.
